Professor Mohamed Haffejee has over 21 years of experience as a respected consultant urological surgeon actively involved as a clinician, mentor, teacher, academic and researcher.
He is in full time private practice at the Netcare Milpark Hospital and the Donald Gordan Medical Centre. Prior to this he was the Chief Specialist at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital having devoted 25 years to state practice.

Prof. Mohamed Haffejee’s Biography
1: Intro
In the management of prostate cancer, Professor Mohamed Haffejee has the singular honour of being trained and accredited in multiple modalities including High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU), Brachytherapy and a fully accredited solo Robotic Surgeon. He is also a trained Greenlight Lazer surgeon in the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
It is his belief that patients should be empowered to make an informed evidence based decision after having been informed of all the options available in managing their disease, including all benefits and potential risks, tailored to their individual needs, expectations and unique cancer biology. To this end he has been instrumental in drawing up the South African Prostate Cancer Guidelines. He is part of a consultative multidisciplinary oncological team that includes experienced medical and radiation oncologists with state-of-the-art facilities.
2: Education
Prof. Mohamed Haffejee is a proud alumnus of University of the Witwatersrand where he received his undergraduate medical degree in 1992, completed his postgraduate training in urology in 1999 and continued as Academic Head and Adjunct Professor of the Division of Urology at the University of the Witwatersrand since 2002.
This is largest academic division of urology in Sub-Saharan Africa providing undergraduate and postgraduate training to both local graduates and from further afield in Africa.
3: Positions
Positions held in the South African College of Urologists include examiner, moderator, convenor and office bearer. He has been chairperson of the Continence Association of South Africa and the head of the Academic Committee of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of South Africa. He has served as a board member of the Centre for HIV-AIDS Prevention Studies (CHAPS) since inception which was founded on the cutting–edge and pioneering research that evolved from the Orange Farm Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) research programme in 2005 at the Wits Urology Clinic. This randomized controlled trial demonstrated that medical male circumcision led to a 60% reduction in HIV acquisitions in heterosexual males and the World Health Organisation’s subsequent adoption and recommendation of VMMC as a proven biomedical HIV prevention strategy.
4: Awards
Prof. Mohamed Haffejee is the recipient of numerous awards including The Guy de Klerk National Lecture Tour by the South African Urological Association on Men’s Health and Gender Based Violence with specific reference to Intimate Partner Violence at Tertiary Institutions, the Bard Gold Medal for prostate cancer research and the SAMA Bonitas Housecall Merit Award for contribution to urology and men’s health in South Africa.
